meet our founders: Phil, Rob & Alissa

Surrey Hills Briquettes is a small, local business built by three people who share a passion for the Surrey Hills, sustainability and doing things properly.

Phil first began exploring the idea after noticing that many of the logs and briquettes on the market were made from softwood or imported from overseas. He questioned the sustainability of growing and felling trees specifically to produce firewood.

Rob and Alissa loved the concept and came on board to help grow the business, bringing their own experience and enthusiasm to the project.

We’re proud to be a small team, rooted in the community we serve, and committed to making a useful product from something that would otherwise go to waste.

Where it all began

Two years ago, Phil noticed that a lot of logs and briquettes on the market were softwood and imported. Not only that, trees were being grown and then felled in order to produce firewood. This method is not sustainable, so he looked at ways to create a more environmentally friendly briquette. After a lot of trial and error, he produced a hardwood briquette that not only is made from a waste product but burns cleaner, longer and hotter.

In love with the concept, Rob and Alissa came on board to grow the business, et voila, Surrey Hills Briquettes was born!

The problem we found

There’s more value in wood waste than you might think.

We believe that looking after the environment starts on our doorstep. We take hardwood sawdust from local joiners, which otherwise would go to waste, and turn it into a usable fuel.

Our briquettes are compressed with only their natural oils. There are no binders or chemicals so they are cleaner for our bodies as well as chimneys and flues.

Their moisture content is lower than traditional logs and therefore burn longer and hotter. They don’t produce much smoke and don’t pop, saving your carpet, and dog, if you use them on an open fire.

Our briquettes are greener, cleaner and more economical than other fuels. And, we have our Ready to Burn certification ensuring our briquettes meet strict standards for domestic burning. What’s not to love?

Our briquettes begin with locally sourced sawdust, collected from sawmills around Albury. We give this valuable by-product a new purpose, rather than letting it go to waste.

The sawdust is brought back to our home, where it is heat-pressed by hand into dense, high-quality briquettes — with no added chemicals or binders.

Once pressed and bagged, our briquettes make their way to local farm shops, garden centres and independent stores across the Surrey Hills, keeping our product close to home and our community.
